Optimize Zyxel WiFi 6 Router Wireless Settings for better stability

  1. Connect to the Router:
    • Connect your computer or device to the router via an Ethernet cable or WiFi.
    • Ensure you’re on the router’s network.
  2. Log in to the Web Interface:
    • Open a web browser and enter the router’s IP address in the address bar. Common addresses for Zyxel routers are:
    • Press Enter to access the login page.
    • Enter the administrator credentials.
  1. Locate the Wireless Settings:
    • Once logged in, navigate to the Network Setting or Configuration menu.
    • Select Wireless from the menu. This may be under:
      • Network Setting > Wireless > General
      • Network Setting > Wireless > WiFi > Edit (for some models like EMG6726/8726-B10A)

  • Channel BandWidth:
    • 2.4 GHz band: Use 20 MHz to minimize interference in crowded WiFi environments.
    • 5 GHz Band: Use 80 MHz (or 160 MHz if supported and your devices are compatible) to maximize WiFi 6 speeds.
  • Security Mode:
    • Select WPA3-SAE if all devices support it for enhanced security.
    • Use WPA3-SAE/WPA2-PSK (AES encryption) for broader compatibility with older devices.

For dual-band routers, you may need to select the band (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz) to configure these settings separately, as the thresholds and power settings can differ between bands.

From the web interface dashboard, go to Network Setting > Wireless > Advanced or Network Setting > Wireless > General > Advanced Setup.

Purpose: Controls when the router uses Request to Send/Clear to Send (RTS/CTS) to manage network collisions in busy WiFi environments. A lower threshold enables RTS/CTS for smaller packets, reducing collisions but adding overhead.

Default Value: Typically set to 2347 (maximum value, effectively disabling RTS/CTS for most packets).

Recommended Configuration:

  • Range: 1 to 2347 (bytes).
  • In a crowded WiFi environment (e.g., apartments), lower the threshold to 500–1000 to reduce collisions for devices with frequent small-packet transmissions (e.g., VoIP, gaming).

Set the RTS/CTS Threshold to 1000.

  • Purpose: Controls the router’s transmission power, affecting WiFi range and signal strength. Higher power increases range but may increase interference with neighboring networks.
  • Default Value: Usually 100% (High).
  • Recommended Configuration:
    • Options: Typically High (100%), Medium (50–75%), or Low (25–50%).
    • Set to High for maximum coverage in large homes or offices with few nearby networks.
    • Use Medium (50–75%) in dense environments (e.g., apartments) to reduce interference while maintaining decent range.
    • Use Low for small spaces or to minimize power consumption and interference.
    • Preferred range
      • 2.4 GHz: Use Medium (50–75%) in crowded areas to reduce interference, as 2.4 GHz signals travel farther.
      • 5 GHz: Use High (75–100%) for maximum speed and range, as 5 GHz signals attenuate faster.
